CYFRA 21-1 EIA – Lung Cancer
The CYFRA 21-1 one-step EIA assay detects cytokeratin-19 fragments in serum using two monoclonal antibodies, BM 19.21 and KS 19.1. Calibrators, controls and patient samples are incubated together with biotinylated Anti-CYFRA 21-1 MAb and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labelled Anti-CYFRA 21-1 MAb in streptavidin coated micro strips.
Cytokeratin-19 is expressed in most simple epithelia, pseudostratified epithelia and non-keratinizing stratified epithelia. Cytokeratin 19 is also highly expressed in both adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, where fragments of Cytokeratin-19 may be released from cells and detected in elevated levels in serum using CYFRA-21-1 assays.
The measurement of CYFRA 21-1 has been shown to be particularly useful in the monitoring and prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer. CYFRA 21-1 continues to be investigated in a number of other disease states including breast, head & neck, and bladder cancer.
